Too Many of Us in TV News Are Being Forced to Work a Second Job

When you work a full-time, high stress, very visible job you should get your weekends off to relax, right?

Not if you’re in TV News.

Not only does someone I work with either call or text me about a story, contact, or breaking news every weekend, I also feel like I need to get a second job. I’m not alone.

So many of my friends in the business have second jobs so they can pay the bills.

Some of them sell Monat, others are Beachbody coaches, some drive for Uber, and others work at Target or grocery stores.

It’s so discouraging to me that we go to school for four years, intern at several stations, and bust our butts working hard, yet we still have to have second jobs just to get by!

I don’t want to spend my days off working, but since I don’t get a clothing, hair, or makeup allowance, and my base salary is something a lot of people would laugh at, I have to consider it.

My company will not allow me to work someplace where viewers will see me. Why? Because they say it makes the TV station look bad.

Um, yeah, and it should!

I’ve asked for a raise and it’s “just not in the budget.” Instead of more pay, how about a clothing allowance or a makeup allowance? Nope, that’s too expensive for this multi-billion dollar company, too.

Maybe I’ll just let my roots grow out, stop wearing makeup, and wear the same two dresses each week. Will they get the point then?

Do you have a second job? A side hustle that helps you pay the bills? Comment below, and let me know what works for you!
