Station market rank

Gregory Deffenbaugh
The news director is a self centered person that says they only care about the station but really only cares about himself. He was awful to work with and would always sing songs and come up with the worst nicknames to make your life awful. He constantly would say he is the boss when we already knew that considering he is the news director. When you say you don't trust your employees how can you make it better then? Worst person to run a station ever along with the General Manager.
Sexual Harassment, An Overall Toxic Work Environment
The news director would constantly say things about people's dress code and so on. He would let people off very easily one day by sending producers home early because they felt sick when it was actually the producer not wanting to do their job. The staffing was awful as well when you have 1 person doing 3 peoples jobs. It is the worst station to work for.
Don't work here under Gregory Deffenbaugh. Look for a different station if you want to go to a starter market.

Greg Deffenbaugh
Rude, unprofessional, toxic, and bad at his job
An Overall Toxic Work Environment
Everyone works hard, but the news director and general manager make it impossible for anyone to do their jobs well. Everyone is over worked, the quality is getting worse, and everyone walks on eggshells because management constantly talks trash about staff.
Do not work here. No one is having a good time and most of the news department is leaving when their contracts are up.

Greg's leadership style was different than what WREX was previously had. He's a micromanager. He wants to be your friend more than your boss. Often unprofessional.
WREX will always likely be a starter station given the market size and pay. Before, you'd come in and learn a lot - especially when it comes to enterprising story ideas. Now? If you pitch a story, it's either approved(regardless how bad it may be) or you're just assigned another story.
Things certainly changed by the time i left. If you're a hard worker and want to learn, I'd still recommend this station.

There’s an unofficial “no jerk” rule at this station. If you think work is beneath you, complain about all your co-workers and aren’t a team-player, you are not welcome here. WREX is all about a healthy work environment and helping people through tough times they may face. I couldn’t have worked for a better station/company.

I’ve had a positive experience working for my current ND. He’s willing to work with young reporters to help them grow into more seasoned journalists.
I think this is a great station for reporters just out of college. The newsroom at WREX really pushes you to become a better reporter. We are required to enterprise original content, develop sources in our community and vet stories everyday. Highly recommend.
