I left prior to Derek becoming the news director, but I did get to meet him. He’s very nice and has worked in the Raleigh area for most of his career I believe, so he’s really knowledgeable and genuinely cares about the work the station is doing. He will schedule time to give all of his reporters feedback and listen to any thoughts/concerns you have as well. The Assistant News Director, Leslie, is also awesome!
This station has changed a LOT (for the better) since the last review was posted in 2022. The previous news director is now retired, and there have been shifts in almost every management position. In my experience here, as long as you work hard, want to learn/are open to feedback, and communicate well throughout the day (story updates, deadlines, etc.), you will be appreciated and totally fine! This is a team who’s open to your pitches and won’t shut them down. It’s a team that builds you up, genuinely appreciates their field reporters/photogs, and prioritizes SAFETY. If you don’t feel safe, you won’t be sent somewhere. Also regarding safety, all live shots require a photog. You may not get one for your story (just depending on availability), but you won’t go live without one.
The only downsides I experienced are low pay/minimal raises (a symptom of Nexstar, not the station), and slight disorganization. Some things were very organized and others weren’t — now sure how it is now, but although it could be annoying at times, it was definitely manageable. The station is also pretty low staffed right now because of the hiring freezes, which I’m hearing is across several different media companies (not just Nexstar). The pros of that is there’s lots of room for promotions, the cons are that they’re spread a little thin for the time being. It’s a great team to work with though, so in my opinion it’s worth it

Not a good leader. He needs to retire.
Sexual Discrimination, Racial Discrimination, Sexual Harassment, An Overall Toxic Work Environment
Does not care about other people’s opinions, puts employees in dangerous situations, “forgetful”, low balls salaries and contract agreements, a puppet for Nexstar bosses, does not listen to others, only values his opinion, cannot make decisions, does not accept changes or new ideas to compete with the other two VERY WELL RATED stations. He constantly compares other employees to each other. The entire news station is unorganized and no one is held accountable for their actions. The station is poorly managed, and there’s high turn over. Probably highest in TV history. Only hires blonde women as reporters/key roles. All other voices are not listened to. Field crews are not appreciated & the desk is poorly ran. You will never feel appreciated here. If you want to work at a shop for 1 year or less, this is the place to be.
Run far, far away. Extremely high turnover rate. Nexstar HR did investigations into WNCN and did nothing despite all of the complaints. Reporters, producers, anchors, photographers, sports, show directors, engineers, promo team, and exec managers/assistant ND and the GM all quit the station within one year. There’s amazingly talented people that work there, but they’re treated so poorly, they leave as soon as possible. If considering moving to the triangle in NC, only look into ABC11 or WRAL.

Horrible. He treats his employees like dirt, is extremely unapproachable and misogynistic.
Sexual Discrimination, Sexual Harassment, An Overall Toxic Work Environment
I was sexually harassed by a photographer and the station forced me to work with him after they had knowledge of the situation. After I filed a complaint I was told I couldn’t wear certain dresses other reporters and anchors wore. I’ve been disrespected, talked down to, and lied to. This is by far the most toxic place I’ve ever worked. I wouldn’t recommend this station to my worst enemy.
