The expectations for the job increase all the time, and The tasks are nearly impossible to get done in a “normal” shift. Lunch breaks are non-existent, and work often lasts hours past the end of my shift, and begin hours before. However, overtime is forbidden, so a lot of time that is worked is off the clock (including the mandated, non-existent lunch break). Expectations and pressure increase but the pay does not, and it has lead to a constant revolving door, and a newsroom where everyone counts down the days to the end of their contract. The only time you will ever hear from the news director is when he doesn’t like what you are wearing or wants to add more work to your workload. The expectations are not balanced with others in the newsroom who get away with “work days” with unknown work actually being done.
Aside from the newsroom dysfunction, there is some great photographers who do an excellent job and are fun to work with. The station is also a legacy station in the mountains of WNC which makes it fun to be in the community.

There is a great number of people who work there because it a JOB not a passion or even a career and treat it as such. There is no sense of camaraderie or teamwork. It's very much every man for himself. The overall attitude of the station is very negative; no one is ever happy to be at work, management included. In the two years I was there, at least five reporters left the business (even though this is a mid-size market) because it was so unbearable.
If you're interested in working here, know that it will be frustrating and you will get annoying and rigid directives from management. This is not a shop where you're encouraged to do things out of the box. Asheville is a beautiful town to live in and coworkers for the most people are very welcoming outside of work. Also keep in mind this is a Sinclair station and operations as such.
