News Dirctors

Tai Takahashi
He is very nice, but not very assertive
There are plenty of opportunities at this station and you will get experience with everything from weather, to crime, to politics, to sports, to feature stories and other unique stories. Jackson has something in the national news every few months, so it's very fast-paced. They also give you complete creative control to work on new content other than just news packages. My only issues we are extremely overworked, forced to do live shots alone almost every day, communication is horrible and you can barely make ends meet with the extremely low pay.

Barely tolerable
Sexual Discrimination, An Overall Toxic Work Environment
Managers pick and choose who they want to hold accountable for mistakes, usually only reprimanding or writing up reporters while letting producers get away with murder. The news director is passive aggressive and would prefer to send an email to the entire newsroom addressing one person's mistake as opposed to saying it to their face, even if he and the other employee are both in the newsroom at the same time and even if the mistake was out of the employee's control. He uses a different tone of voice with women and loves to stir up drama among the team. But Tai isn't the real boss, it's the assignment manager who very well may have been sent from hell to destroy you. She will give you near impossible stories to complete, sending you to the boarder of Arkansas with nothing but the clothes on your back but will be appalled and chastise you when you have nothing to show for it. Be prepared to be hanging on by a tattered thread by the time you leave, whether it's after six months or your full contract. Generally speaking, the young people in the newsroom are communal and have each others' backs, but there are plenty of folks ready to stab their coworkers in the back by sending private info to FTV Live. People are leaving broadcast by the dozen and WJTV is no exception.
Despite all things said before, the market is an excellent learning experience. In addition, as far as news goes, pay is actually decent at WJTV and Jackson is a very low cost of living area. You will cover everything from puppy parades to sports to severe weather to murders to politics. If you can tolerate those things for 2-3 years depending on the contract and transfer clause, I do recommend it.

Terrible
Racial Discrimination, An Overall Toxic Work Environment
He is not fair. He gossips about his own employees. He lies to you. Some people do whatever they want. Others he his hard on. Work somewhere else.
Do not work for Nexstar. There are no good stations in the group, and they don’t pay well. WJTV is among the worst. If you move to Jackson, work at WLBT or WAPT.

Tai is a nice person, however very passive.
An Overall Toxic Work Environment
The station is dead last in the market and there are obvious reasons why. Ranked distant third out of three stations. There's a monotonous mindset of refusing to change. Staff is overworked, underpaid and unappreciated. Still a good place to get experience and grow. Just don't expect to have fun doing it.
Extremely lazy, old-fashioned main anchors that have been there forever. Outdated presentation, young producers lacking concern passion or drive. The station is run by an assignment manager who has a bad attitude and very toxic management skills. Passive leadership that doesn't take control. Overall unhappy newsroom, but good opportunity to learn. The market itself will teach you. Not the station. Its what you make of it.
