The ND is the most hands-off person I have ever met. She hides in her office, and you can often hear her cackling on the phone with family or friends when there is breaking news and the newsroom is chaos. She diminishes others’ feelings by saying she has it rough too. She is not a newsroom leader.
An Overall Toxic Work Environment
Most of the managers check out for the day by 5 p.m. There’s zero communication to anyone that works in the newsroom. Reporters are afraid of the assignment desk. Overall, toxic place to work.
Live 5 is refusing to pay their people a living wage for what it costs to live in Charleston. They’re losing employees left and right because nobody can afford to live here. The people who are staying, either work additional jobs to make ends meet or they get financial help from their parents. DO. NOT. WORK. HERE.

An Overall Toxic Work Environment
Managers spoke badly about other employees openly and there was never any positive feedback. Managers also picked favorites, and never helped the other people become better journalists. Everything I learned, I learned through trial and error or my co-workers, not managers, especially not the news director.

Horrific. She is manipulative, petty, and is the reason that the entire newsroom wants to leave. I’ve never encountered anyone more emotionally abusive than that woman.
An Overall Toxic Work Environment
The ND talks over people, calls them out in front of coworkers for things only she considered problems, trash talks her employees to their peers, and so much more. My former coworkers are some of the best people in the world and the station itself was a good one to work for but the toxicity she puts into the work environment causes so much anxiety and fear. Being called stupid on a daily basis is never how anyone should live.
