Chaotic, lack luster, I taught him more than he taught me
An Overall Toxic Work Environment
General manager Jean Turnbough is the WORST. She’s a horrible person who has created a toxic, unpleasant work environment. She always claims she knows nothing about news, but always buts in in the news department. She uses personal vendettas against staff that hinders the entire news station. For a starter market, you don’t learn anything because you never get any guidance. The morale is horrible, except for a few lovely people who are so nice they don’t deserve to have to work there. As an MMJ you never get any feedback on your work. I watched 8 people quit before me, and I left early as well.
If you want Mississippi try any other market but Greenville. The delta is a wonderful place but the tv station is aweful. Beware of Jean Turnbough she’s run so many talented people away. Do your journalistic duty and research her before accepting a job with her. Never take anything she tells/offers you as truth.

Gavin Maliska
Bad News Director
An Overall Toxic Work Environment
Gavin Mailska is a stern, demanding news director and leader who prioritizes hard news. He appreciates a hard work ethic and an employee willing to go the extra mile. While you may excel at your job, Gavin may not be the first to tell you. That said if you're sensitive or feel the need to be told how much you're appreciated, you may not want to work for Gavin. But if you want a boss who will demand a high level of quality, and that you deliver on what your job calls on you to do, he'll be someone you want to work under. While I wish some of my efforts were more appreciated under Gavin, it's not his style to show it. And truthfully, I'm better having worked under him. It made me more cut throat as a journalist. The guy taught me the basics. I hadn't gone to journalism school and he gave me a shot. He edited my scripts. He didn't teach me style, that's your job. But he taught me what to look for, questions to ask, and how to approach stories. These are things I didn't know. Under him, I felt confident moving forward in my career because I knew I had the fundamental skills of reporting. Some days I didn't think I was making progress because Gavin isn't the nicest guy in the world.
