An Overall Toxic Work Environment
They’ll overwork you, you’re undervalued and underpaid. There are great stories in this market but you won’t have much guidance.

Awful. Living hell. Resentful.
An Overall Toxic Work Environment
Management seriously couldn’t care any less about you. You’re constantly belittled and criticized. If you want to know what severe depression feels like, work here
Management will turn down great stories because they don’t want to piss off the public agencies in town. The town knows this and feels like they have KYMA wrapped around their finger

He was a great leader. He manages several stations all over one roof. He helped me get experience I needed to grow. He worked with everyone on schedules and let them cover news that they were passionate about.
The news director and general manager made me feel like a family member. They genuinely cared about my future and success.
The news director also works late and will stay during election nights and roll up his sleeves and produce right along side of you. I have had worked in 4 different markets and I have never seen a news director as involved as he was. Highly recommend for your first market.

Open to story ideas, knows the market well (homegrown)
For journalists looking for your "in" to the business, this market gives you the opportunity to cover national stories. Being a part of the community, rather than just doing your job and going home really helps out in this market. Each shift is a different ball game. Morning reporters turn evergreen stories and feel good pieces. Dayside reporters get a pick of everything. Nightside is hard-hitting and many times you are at crime scenes. It looks like lately the market has been filled with border and crime stories.
It's possible to grow in the market. New journalists need to be ready to really dedicate time to their craft and understand that nothing is given to you. You are a multimedia journalist. This means you need to know how to shoot, write and edit, like in any small market. It's what you make of it. The market will prepare you for your next move, even if it doesn't seem that way. Reporters have to learn quickly how to cover court, crime, politics, and even the fun stuff - like air shows, rodeos, money giveaways, and cute community events.

An Overall Toxic Work Environment
A very toxic environment to work in. ND plays favorites, employees are uninclusive, have huge egos/do not respect each other. The turnover rate is very high, FOX/ABC/CBS/NBC/Telemundo affiliates are all under one roof..extremely weird. Management is unorganized and does not deal with issues fairly. It's a shame because it is a great community with a lot of story potential.

Sexual Discrimination, Sexual Harassment, An Overall Toxic Work Environment
Unorganized newsroom led by a ND who lacks news judgment, lots of newsroom egos, no guidance and lack of journalistic integrity. Clicks and website views drive this newsroom - not the quality of content.
There are great stories in this market (close to the border, lettuce capital of the world, crime, great features) but there's often fights over who gets to cover the big story of the day. The ND usually plays favorites. If you're not on KYMA (all the stations are under one roof) then don't expect any resources or priority. KYMA evening shows are the ND's pride and joy.
